A viral video of Dutch Palestinian model Bella Hadid expressing her support for Israel was determined to be an AI-generated deepfake after racking up more than 20 million views on X.

Posted by an Israeli user named Danel Ben Namer, the 28-second clip presents Hadid speaking at a podium in a formal setting, with her lip movements and voice appearing to match her statement.

“Hi, it’s Bella Hadid. On October 7, 2023, Israel faced a tragic attack by Hamas. I can’t stay silent. I apologize for my past remarks,” she appears to state in the video.

“This tragedy has opened my eyes to the pain endured here and I stand with Israel against terror. I have taken time to truly learn the historical context. Now with a clearer understanding, I hope we can engage in constructive dialogue moving forward. Thank you,” the video continues.

After rocketing around the internet, a community note was affixed to the post alerting users that the clip was faked.

“This audio of this video was made using AI,” the note reads. “The [original] speech was from the 2016 Global Lyme Alliance Awards where Bella Hadid was receiving an award.”

In the original video, Hadid talked about living with Lyme disease and thanked her family for their support.

The clarification on X also stated Hadid’s actual position on the deteriorating conflict as the Israel Defense Forces continues its ground raid in Gaza.

“Bella Hadid has been clear on her support for Palestine,” it reads, along with a link to an article chronicling her comments and actions on the issue.

Recently, Hadid took to Instagram to express her concerns over worsening conditions in the Gaza Strip, where many Palestinians live — and said she has been inundated with threats since the area’s controlling military group Hamas launched a deadly October 7 terror attack which killed 1,400 Israelis, mostly civilians.

Citing figures from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry, the AP has reported 8,500 deaths in Gaza thus far.

“I’ve been sent hundreds of death threats daily, my phone number has been leaked, and my family has felt to be in danger,” Hadid wrote.

“But I can not be silenced any longer. Fear is not an option. The people and children of Palestine, especially in Gaza, cannot afford our silence. We are not brave – they are.”

Hadid’s father, real estate developer Mohamed Hadid, has said in interviews that his family fled Palestine in 1949 after war erupted in the region.

He currently holds Jordanian and American citizenship. Hadid’s mother, Yolanda Hadid, is Dutch.
