Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl,

who is expected to plead guilty to charges of desertion and misbehavior on Monday

, said he would not be able to get a fair trial now because

President Trump once called him a “no good traitor” and said he should be executed

.

“We may as well go back to kangaroo courts and lynch mobs that got what they wanted,” Bergdahl said in an interview taped last year that was

aired Monday on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

“The people who want to hang me, you’re never going to convince those people.”

Bergdahl spent five years in captivity by the Taliban in Afghanistan after walking off his post in 2009.
He was released in 2014 in exchange for five Taliban prisoners who were being held in Guantanamo Bay.
During the presidential campaign, Trump railed about Bergdahl and suggested that during the old days he would have been shot.
“We’re tired of Sgt. Bergdahl, who’s a traitor, a no-good traitor, who should have been executed,” Trump told a crowd in Las Vegas on a campaign stop in October 2015. “Thirty years ago he would have been shot.”
In the interview with British filmmaker Sean Langan, Bergdahl also hit back at allegations that he sympathized with his Taliban captors and even took up arms against his former comrades.
“You know, it’s just insulting frankly,” Bergdahl said. “It’s very insulting, the idea that they would think I did that.”
