Senator Bernie Sanders said on CNN Wednesday that he would consider taking a job as Labor secretary in Joe Biden’s administration if the position is offered to him.
The democratic socialist lawmaker from Vermont said he’d take the cabinet position if he was given authority to help “working families.”
“If I had a portfolio that allowed me to stand up and fight for working families, would I do it? yes, I would,” Sanders said.
“I want to do everything I can to protect the working families of this country who are under tremendous duress right now and whether that is in the senate or in the Biden administration, who knows. Let’s see how that unfolds,” he added.
The secretary of Labor oversees the enforcement of federal labor laws in the country that affect some 150 million US workers and 10 million workplaces, according to the agency’s website.
As secretary, Sanders would also deal with laws affecting unions in the US, as well as federal minimum wage and workplace discrimination.
Biden has not announced any of his cabinet picks as he and his campaign have moved into a transition phase after the presidential election. Biden is the projected winner of the race, but President Trump has yet to concede.
