Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is looking to use a legal loophole to allow federal funds intended for education to instead be used to purchase firearms for teachers, a report said.

DeVos is considering using the Student Support and Academic Enrichment Program to bypass laws that prohibit purchasing firearms with federal funds, according to the New York Times.

The SSAE grants, which are intended for student enrichment, would instead be given to states or districts to use that money toward buying weapons, the paper said.

A spokesperson for the Education Department said they look at a wide variety of methods of improving school safety.

“The department is constantly considering and evaluating policy issues, particularly issues related to school safety,” said the spokeswoman, Liz Hill.

“The secretary nor the department issues opinions on hypothetical scenarios.”

During her Senate confirmation hearing in 2017, DeVos said that a school might need a firearm to combat grizzly bears, among other threats.
