WASHINGTON — Ron Burkle used to be Bill Clinton’s business partner and favorite travel companion — but now he supports Republican John Kasich for president.
“They never asked me for a penny,” the billionaire investor said of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, the Los Angeles Times reported.
“People would expect Bill Clinton-style love and attention,” he vented. “That is not going to happen with her.”
Burkle, who is co-hosting a fund-raiser for Kasich, the Ohio governor, at his West Hollywood estate this month, says he hasn’t ruled out backing Clinton later on.
Burkle helped engineer a soft landing for Bill Clinton after his presidency, though the two severed their financial relationship after Hillary became secretary of state.
Clinton’s role in the partnership was to be a rainmaker, but talking up business “wasn’t his thing,” Burkle said.
Burkle later walked back this statement.
“My statement regarding President Clinton not being focused on business endeavors was a compliment, not a criticism,” he told The Post.
“The former president’s time was far better spent working on solving the world’s HIV/AIDS crisis then on business deals. In fact, we are all better off because he didn’t go into business.”
