Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson said he’ll seek a recount in the too-close-to-call Florida race because his challenger’s margin of victory was too small.
“We are proceeding to a recount,” Nelson said in a statement Wednesday, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
But Rick Scott, the former Republican governor of the Sunshine State who claimed victory Tuesday night even though the results showed he was leading with a razor-thin margin, said the “race is over.”
“It’s a sad way for Bill Nelson to end his career. He is desperately trying to hold on to something that no longer exists,” said Chris Hartline, a Scott spokesman.
With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Scott had 50.2 percent of the vote compared to Nelson’s 49.8.
But that 0.4 percentage-point margin of victory isn’t enough under state law to avoid a recount.
Florida law requires a recount if the margin is under 0.5 percent.
State officials did not comment Wednesday.
