Mike Bloomberg said on the Democratic debate stage in Nevada on Wednesday that he hasn’t released his tax returns because they’re too long to produce on software like TurboTax.
The billionaire Democrat was responding to an NBC moderator who asked the former New York City mayor if there was a transparency issue with his campaign because he’s not released his tax returns.
“Fortunately, I make a lot of money, and we do business all around the world,” he responded.
“And we are preparing it. The number of pages will probably be in the thousands of pages. I can’t go to TurboTax.”
Bloomberg noted that he released his returns every year for the 12 years he served as New York mayor — and added that a large part of his return is the money he donates to charity each year.
He then said his returns will be “out in a few weeks.”
Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar took the opportunity to knock Bloomberg, saying all the other candidates on the stage had released their returns.
“When it comes to tax returns, everyone up here has released their tax returns, mayor,” she said.
“I think — and it is a major issue, because the president of the United States has been hiding behind his tax returns, even when courts order him to come forward with those tax returns.”
