At least 4,700 coronavirus cases have been linked to a massive five-day long festival that took place in a coastal English town earlier this month, a report said.
The cluster of cases are among people who either went to Boardmasters in Newquay, or had some connection to its attendees, The Guardian reported.
Boardmasters hosts live music and surfing competitions. More than 50,000 people attended the festival this year from Aug. 11 to Aug. 15, the report said.
Cornwall county officials considered nixing the annual event, but ultimately decided to let it go on as scheduled.
According to the festival’s website, people had to either show proof of a negative COVID-19 test or proof of vaccination to attend. Masks were not required, but encouraged.
COVID-19 cases in Cornwall and the nearby Isles of Scilly surged in the seven days leading up to Aug. 19, with 717 cases per 100,000 people, the report said.
