WASHINGTON — President Obama admitted Iran’s “nefarious activities” may get an economic boost from sanctions relief, but argued the windfall isn’t enough to be a “game-changer.”

In an interview taped last week and aired on CNN Sunday, Obama acknowledged Iran has provided arms to Hezbollah and stirred up unrest in the Middle East and said he anticipates such activity could benefit under the Iran nuclear agreement.

“I have no doubt that as Iran’s economy improved or they got some financial inflows that relieves some fiscal pressure on their military, they may be able to fund some additional activities,” Obama told Fareed Zakaria on “GPS.” “But it’s not a game-changer.”

Obama has been seeking public and congressional support for the Iran nuclear agreement, which he contends is a “diplomatic breakthrough” because it ensures “we are cutting off all the pathways by which Iran might get a nuclear weapon.”

Opponents of the deal, including New York Sen. Charles Schumer, say the United States can’t trust Iran.
