Images of health care workers adorned the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil during an Easter Sunday tribute to doctors and nurses amid the global coronavirus crisis.
Depictions of medical workers and messages of hope in several languages were projected onto the 125-foot-tall statue atop Corcovado mountain in Rio de Janiero, stunning photos show.
“Stay at home,” one message read on the massive statue’s arm alongside a smiling nurse.
At another point during the tribute, the statue was decorated as a doctor, complete with stethoscope and lab coat, photos show.
Rio’s archbishop, Dom Orani Tempesta, performed a mass at the base of the statue during the tribute to medical workers, CNN reports. It’s the second time the national landmark has been illuminated in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Flags of several countries impacted by the virus were displayed on the statue last month, along with the hashtag “Praying together” in multiple languages.
At least 1,230 people have died from the coronavirus in Brazil, with more than 22,300 other confirmed cases, according to a Johns Hopkins University database.
