The British man exposed to a deadly nerve agent has regained consciousness — but isn’t “out of the woods yet,” officials said Tuesday.
Charlie Rowley, who had been in the Salisbury District Hospital since coming in contact with the Novichok nerve agent on June 30, is awake — a “small but significant improvement,” the hospital said in a statement.
“While this is welcome news, clearly we are not out of the woods yet,” the statement said, according to the BBC.
The 45-year-old “is still very unwell,” and in critical but stable condition, according to the statement.
“Charlie is still very unwell and will continue to require specialist, round-the-clock care here at Salisbury District Hospital.”
His partner, Dawn Sturgess, 44, who was also exposed to the poison, died on Sunday
Police are investigating how the couple came in contact with the nerve agent and whether there is a link to the case of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, who were poisoned with the same substance in Salisbury.
The UK government has blamed Russia for the incident, but the authorities in the Motherland deny any involvement.
