BEIJING — A bus fell from a cliff in north-central China on Friday, killing 30 people on board, authorities said.

Twenty-five people died at the scene in Shaanxi province and five died in a hospital from their injuries, the propaganda office of Chunhua county said in an online statement. There was no word on the cause of the accident, and authorities said they were investigating.

State broadcaster China Central Television reported earlier that the bus was carrying more than 40 passengers and that it fell into a ravine more than 30 yards deep near a forest park.

County officials gave no information on possible injuries from the crash.

Bus accidents are common on China’s windy mountain roads, where drivers often ignore safety rules by speeding or carrying too many passengers.
