South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg – a surging Democratic 2020 hopeful – officiated an emergency wedding back in Indiana Monday.

Buttigieg said he was enjoying some downtime this morning when a young couple paid him a visit. “In my mind I saw the rare few minutes of free time I had left vanishing, and without meaning to be discouraging, tried to hint that I did not have a lot of time for unplanned meetings,” Buttigieg wrote in a Facebook post.

But the couple, Mary and Gabe, explained that they were on their way to the hospital for a 9 a.m. c-section appointment. “And they were hoping they could be married before she delivered,” Buttigieg said, noting that it was already around 8:15 a.m.

“Obviously there’s only one answer to that question,” Buttigieg said.

The 37-year-old politician gathered his staff to play witnesses and they subbed in a ribbon when there was no ring. The newlyweds left the mayor’s office to deliver Jade Katherine Jones, “South Bend’s newest resident,” Buttigieg said.
