A California congresswoman wore a special tribute to Shirley Chisholm at Wednesday’s presidential inauguration — the trailblazer black pol’s pearls.
“Because of Shirley Chisholm, I am. Because of Shirley Chisholm, Vice President Harris is,’’ US Rep. Barbara Lee tweeted along with a photo of herself in the necklace.
In 1968, Chisholm, a Brooklyn native, became the first black woman elected to Congress. Four years later, she made history again as the first black woman to run for president.
Kamala Harris, a former presidential candidate, officially took office with President Biden on Wednesday as the country’s first female veep. She also is the first black and person of southeast Asian descent to become vice president.
Lee, a Democrat who worked on Chisholm’s unsuccessful 1972 presidential bid, added in her tweet Wednesday, “On this historic day, I’m wearing Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm’s pearls, given to me by her goddaughter, who said that her godmother ‘would not want it any other way.’ ”
Chisholm, who served seven terms as a congresswoman from New York, died in 2005 at age 81.
Harris also wore pearls to the inauguration — a nod to her sisters at the black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha, whose founders are referred to as the “Twenty Pearls,” according to Cosmopolitan magazine.
