California now recommends a COVID-19 vaccine booster for all adults despite federal guidance restricting them to at-risk groups, according to reports.
The state’s public health officer, Tomás Aragón, instructed health officials in a Nov. 9 letter to “allow patients to self-determine their risk of exposure,” according to the Associated Press.
“Do not turn a patient away who is requesting a booster,” he wrote.
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, however, recommends boosters only for the elderly, the sick, those in group homes and those working in high-risk settings.
President Biden had planned boosters for all adults, but in September the federal Food and Drug Administration would not approve boosters for healthy adults younger than 65.
