Radio stations in Southern California were honoring Kobe Bryant by going silent for 1 minute and 8 seconds on Monday afternoon.

The Southern California Broadcasters Association had asked its members to pay tribute to the former Los Angeles Lakers star with the silence, symbolizing his original No. 8 jersey, at noon PST, or 3 p.m. New York time, the LA Times reported. The NBA legend went on to also wear No. 24.

He died at age 41 in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, Calif., on Sunday morning. Also killed were his 13-year-old daughter and seven others.
