Four California teachers want to teach Delta a lesson.
The educators are suing the airline after a Delta jet with engine trouble had to dump fuel over their school in a densely populated area near Los Angeles, according to Gloria Allred, their attorney.
“The plaintiffs could feel the fuel on their clothes, their flesh, their eyes and their skin,” Allred told the Associated Press. “Fuel penetrated their mouths and noses as well, producing a lasting and severe irritation, and a lasting and a noxious taste and smell.”
Delta declined to comment on the lawsuit.
Nearly 60 students and teachers were exposed to fuel vapor and were examined for injuries, officials said. Some suffered skin irritations, but no one was taken to the hospital.
The Boeing 777 had just taken off from Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday when the pilots encountered engine trouble. They had to jettison more than 15,000 gallons of fuel so the plane could make a safe emergency landing back at the airport, officials said.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the fuel dump.
