They broke the glass ceiling — and some say they should break their near-silence on the NFL’s recent domestic-violence scandals.
The female head honchos in question include Campbell Soup CEO Denise Morrison, General Motors CEO Mary Barra and PepsiCo Chief Executive Indra K. Nooyi.
“It’s a tremendous opportunity for women’s leadership to demonstrate and differentiate itself in an arena where values have come second to money,” Donna Lopiano, the former CEO of the Women’s Sports Foundation, told Bloomberg Businessweek.
“You would hope.”
Others say they should be a part of the broader conversation, as well.
“They need to talk about the entire culture of the NFL,” says David Johnson, a crisis-communications expert at Atlanta-based Strategic Vision. “And they need to talk about how they relate to this culture as women.”
While the three female CEOs have remained mum about the scandal, their companies have offered tepid responses.
GM spokesperson Ryndee S. Carney said the company “supports” the independent investigation into the NFL’s treatment of Ray Rice’s domestic-violence case.
PepsiCo said, “We are encouraged to see the NFL is now treating this with the seriousness it deserves.”
Campbell Soup said, “We expect the NFL to take appropriate action.”
