A British mother accused of killing her toddler collected child benefit cash for six months after her tot’s death, lawyers claimed in court.

In a case echoing Florida mom Casey Anthony‘s trial, Kathryn Smith, 23, is accused of murdering her 21-month-old daughter, the UK Independent reported.

The toddler, Ayeeshia Jane, suffered heart failure from an impact and died in May 2014, but her mom continued to collect benefits as if her daughter were still alive, the prosecution told a Birmingham Crown Court judge on Monday.

Smith, who says she is innocent, contacted the Department of Work and Pensions in October 2014, but “didn’t want to admit she had gone.”

“I didn’t want to get into the conversation about my daughter dying,” she told the court.

Doctors said the little girl was so injured so badly, she looked like a “car crash victim.”

Also accused of murder is Smith’s ex-boyfriend, Matthew Rigby.

Smith said Rigby joined her in the kitchen just moments after she left him alone in the bedroom, when she suddenly heard the child “gasp.” They rushed in to check on the girl, finding her in her cot, pale, saliva bubbling from her lips, and “staring out of the window.”

In 2011, young mom Anthony was acquitted for the murder of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, whose body was found in a swamp near her mom’s home.
