A Chicago dad was arrested after his 3-year-old son fatally shot himself in the face, according to authorities.

Little Mikah Davis was alone in a room with a loaded gun Sunday afternoon when his family heard a gunshot, Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted.

His parents raced him to Advocate Trinity Hospital but he was pronounced dead an hour later, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, with Guglielmi breaking the “tragic news” that the youngster “succumbed to his injuries.”

Dad Ronald Davis, 29, was arrested an hour after his son’s death for allegedly leaving the loaded gun where the child could reach it, according to the Chicago Tribune.

He was hit with felony charges of endangerment leading to death and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. Under Illinois state law, convicted felons are forbidden from having firearms.

He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

“We are concerned on how a firearm ended up in that house, how it ended up unsecured and certainly how it ended up in the hands of a 3-year-old child,” Guglielmi told the Sun-Times.

Mikah’s 10-month-old sibling has been placed in protective custody, Guglielmi told the paper.
