A California child accidentally shot his mother from the back seat of their car right outside of his preschool, police said.

The mom, who is not being publicly identified, was hospitalized and is in fair condition following the incident in the Ramona Preschool parking lot in Norwalk on Wednesday, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said.

Police arrested a man Thursday for criminal storage of a firearm and child endangerment after the child managed to get hold of a weapon while in the back seat of a Honda, police told ABC. The man’s relationship to the shooting victim was not clear.

“We received a call of an assault with a deadly weapon gunshot victim. When deputies got there, they found an adult female Hispanic with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to her upper torso,” Deputy Marvin Crowder told ABC on Wednesday.

“It appears to be an accident with the young kid pulling the trigger of the shotgun in the backseat of his own car and striking his mother,” he added.

The L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services took four children into custody.
