These chilling images show the nuts and bolts — literally — of the explosive devices that tore into the bodies of the victims of the Brussels terror attacks.
Officials at the Gasthuisberg hospital in Leuven, Belgium, displayed screws, shrapnel and other pieces of steel recovered from those hit at the Brussels airport and subway station.
“These bastards sure know what they’re doing,” a senior Belgian official said about the effectiveness of the bombs in inflicting widespread carnage, CBS New reported.
King Philippe of Belgium arrives at Gasthuisberg hospital on March 24 to visit victims of the attack.GettyThey were made with a white powder called TATP — triacetone triperoxide, also known among jihadis as “Mother of Satan.”
On Tuesday, police found about 33 pounds of the deadly compound in an apartment the attackers used in the Brussels neighborhood of Schaerbeek.
Also uncovered was a cache of other bomb-making materials — including about 150 liters (40 gallons) of acetone, 30 liters (8 gallons) of oxygenated water, detonators and a suitcase full of nails and screws.
Military nurse Jan Vaes said the scene at the airport was far worse than anything he had experienced in a tour in Afghanistan.
“For me they were war injuries, a lot of bleeding by shrapnel, legs were ripped off, things like that,” Vaes told CBS News. “Normally you see that maybe in Baghdad or Beirut — it’s new in Belgium, I’m very sorry.”
