A chimpanzee broke out of her enclosure at the Indianapolis Zoo Friday morning, sparking a lockdown that trapped dozens of visitors — including 37 schoolchildren on a field trip.

Jake Oakman, the zoo’s senior vice president of external relations, told WLTX-TV that the female chimp escaped the International Chimpanzee Complex around 10 a.m.

Sources within the zoo told FOX59 the escaped chimp is believed to be named Mara. The zoo housed 21 chimpanzees as of May 2024.

According to the Indianapolis Zoo, Mara is a 34-year-old female who moved from a zoo in Puerto Rico two years ago.

Officials put the zoo on lockdown and moved guests to safe areas. A photo shared with local media appeared to show the chimp standing on top of her enclosure.

Zoo officials even summoned the Indianapolis Fire Department to the scene.

“At approximately 10 a.m., a female chimpanzee was seen outside her exhibit. Following emergency protocol, the Indianapolis Zoo was immediately locked down, and all guests were escorted to secure locations,” the zoo said in a statement to People magazine.

Some visitors sheltered inside the dolphin exhibit while others were told to wait in their cars, according to WTHR-TV.

Bus driver Sherman Williams wrote on Facebook that he was stuck at the zoo with 37 kids, parents and teachers during the escape.

“I’m on a Field Trip at the Indianapolis Zoo with 37 kids, parents, and teachers. Why is there a Chimpanzee on the loose at the Zoo,” Williams wrote.

The zoo’s animal care team eventually sedated the chimp and returned her to the exhibit. The facility reopened shortly after noon.

The zoo added that there were no injuries to guests, staff, or the animal.

“The Zoo’s security, animal care, and veterinary teams train for these scenarios and responded in a textbook and professional manner,” the zoo said in its statement.

The zoo opened the International Chimpanzee Complex over Memorial Day weekend last year. It’s among the nation’s biggest chimp communities. The animals can roam on a trail system that’s hundreds of feet long.

The complex can house up to 30 chimpanzees.

Dr. Rob Shumaker, president and CEO of the Indianapolis Zoo, told WTHR in December 2023 the exhibit was designed “from the point of view of the chimpanzees first” to allow for unexpected encounters with visitors.

“People have those moments where they are forever-changed about their understanding or their feelings about a chimpanzee,” Shumaker said at the time.

The escape comes weeks after two endangered tortoises were stolen from the zoo.

Both were later found dumped in a box at a park in Pendleton, roughly 50 minutes northeast of Indianapolis.

The zoo did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
