Chinese carmakers are revving up face-mask production amid shortages in the fight against the coronavirus outbreak, according to a report.
Several auto companies announced they’ve converted their assembly lines to churn out face masks, with one manufacturer promising to produce 5 million a day, Bloomberg reported.
Warren Buffett-backed BYD, an electric car maker, has said it will start production Feb. 17 with the output rising to 5 million each day by the end of the month.
Meanwhile, General Motors venture SAIC-GM-Wuling said it began using 14 production lines Sunday to fabricate masks, with expectations to make 1.7 million daily, the outlet reported.
Guangzhou Automobile, which produces cars with Toyota and Honda, said it’s also looking to manufacture the protective gear, in addition to equipment for mask production.
The announcements come as the world faces a chronic shortage of gowns, masks, gloves and other protective equipment, according to the World Health Organization. The UN agency has been distributing supplies, including masks and gloves, to every region.
