The CIA has released a slick new video to try to recruit disgruntled Russian spies as double agents for Washington – a not-so-covert move swiftly trolled by the Kremlin.
The Russian-language clip, clocking it at nearly 3 minutes, was released Monday on the Central Intelligence Agency’s official social media channels, including its X and Telegram accounts, where it has 3.4 million and 13,600 followers, respectively.
Accompanied by melancholy classical music, the video’s narrator is a fictional 35-year-old employee of GRU, Russia’s much-feared military intelligence agency, who portrays himself as a patriot who loves Russia and once served as a paratrooper, having followed in the footsteps of his late father.
“Do I have enough courage to confront this betrayal?” the GRU officer wonders aloud in the video, before saying that he has realized the real enemy is inside Russia.
“The top leadership has sold the country out for palaces and yachts at a time when our soldiers are chewing rotten potatoes and firing from antediluvian weapons. Our people are forced to give bribes to simply find work,” the disillusioned intelligence officer narrates as the video shows official limousines and wealthy smug Russians giving toasts around a dinner table.
CIA Director William Burns said in July that disaffection among some Russians over the war in Ukraine was creating a rare opportunity to recruit spies. REUTERS“Members of the elites in insanely expensive watches are whiling away the time, while corruption and nepotism are eating away at my country from within,” the fictional character says. “I have seen the light.”
The narrator says his patriotism has compelled him to act and work with the CIA.
“What I inherited from my father I will pass on to my son — the desire to see the Russian people prosper and unlock their potential,” he says. “I was born for this struggle — the struggle with an internal foe. I have not lost hope. I am not powerless.”
“My desire is to protect Russia. I will become the spark of truth — for my son.”
The U.S. CIA has released a Russian-language video to try to persuade Russian intelligence employees to work as double agents for Washington. Twitter/CIAThe video’s final shot depicts the narrator contacting the CIA on his cell phone from a snowy courtyard and concludes with a final message urging disaffected Russian officers to reach out to the CIA.
“Those around you may not want to hear the truth. But we do. You are not powerless,” it says before listing ways to discreetly contact the US intelligence agency.
This is the third recruitment video of its kind to have been released by the CIA since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
“We are seeing more outreach from Russians as a result of these videos,” a CIA rep told NBC News. “If it weren’t working, we wouldn’t be on video number three.”
CIA Director William Burns said in July that disillusionment among some Russians over the war was creating a rare opportunity to recruit spies.
The latest video has been viewed on CIA’s X account nearly 300,000 times as of Tuesday.
But Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the CIA is wasting its time trying to reach Russians through the popular platform, which is banned in Russia.
“Those around you may not want to hear the truth. But we do. You are not powerless,” says the video, the latest in a series of recruitment videos targeting Russia. Twitter/CIA“Somebody needs to tell the CIA that in our country [Russian social network] VKontakte is much more popular than the banned X. And that VKontakte’s audience is much larger,” Peskov quipped Tuesday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s mouthpiece further downplayed the significance of the US intelligence service’s latest recruitment push.
“You know, this practice is quite common, intelligence agencies around the world very often use the media and social networks to recruit new employees,” Peskov said. “And they do it all the time, the CIA does it every year.”
