BAR HARBOR, Maine — Officials with Acadia National Park say a climber survived a 60-foot fall on a trail known for its steep cliffs.

Park officials say the 26-year-old visitor was hiking on Precipice Trail on Monday when he reached up to grab a rock above him to pull himself up. The rock gave way and the man somersaulted down, breaking bones and suffering lacerations.

Officials say the injuries suffered by the man were not life-threatening. They say heavy fog made air support such as helicopters impossible, so a carry-out operation was undertaken instead after a 911 call. The man was taken by ambulance to Mount Desert Island Hospital when rescuers reached the road.

Park officials have declined to identify the climber beyond saying he is from Portland.
