A man appeared to have jumped off a Carnival Dream cruise in Texas this week — sparking an extensive search by the US Coast Guard, according to authorities.
The unidentified 26-year-man went overboard 47 miles southwest of Galveston around 8:45 p.m. Thursday, the Coast Guard said in a statement.
The ship was heading from the Lone Star State to the Mexican island of Cozumel on a four-day excursion.
“Based on camera footage, it appears the guest jumped from his stateroom balcony,” the cruise line said in a statement issued to ABC 13. “The ship’s command promptly began search and rescue procedures, returned to the area near where the incident occurred and notified the US Coast Guard which is sending a helicopter to assist in the search. The onboard CareTeam is assisting the guest’s family.”
Darell Byer, another guest on the ship, took video as the Coast Guard searched for the missing passenger.
“We got a pretty sad situation out here right now, man,” Byer told the station. “A man overboard. We turned the ship around, and we’re in a search pattern right now. I didn’t know the passenger. [I have a] good idea who it was. They were calling the name out for quite a while, several times.”
