DENTON, Texas — A 20-year-old student at the University of North Texas has died after a shooting in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Police in Denton say Sara Mutschlechner was driving a vehicle when passengers in her car exchanged words with people in a nearby SUV carrying five or six men.

Someone in the SUV fired a gun toward her car. Mutschlechner was struck, and her car crashed into a utility pole.

Witnesses told police she was the designated driver for others in the car.

Police are searching for the SUV and the passengers who were inside.
