The Colorado woman who was killed in a bear attack was identified this week and remembered by her heartbroken boyfriend as a “lifelong adventurer and lover of the outdoors.”

Laney Malavolta, 39, was walking her dogs near Durango on Friday night, when a bear mauled and ate her, according to the local CBS affiliate. Malvolta’s remains were found in the stomach of a bear on Saturday night, the CBS station reported.

The cause of death, according to the La Plata County coroner, was “perforating injury to neck,” CBS 4 Denver reported.

“There was consumption on the body, and there was a lot of bear sign in the area,” said Jason Clay, a spokesman for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, according to the station.

“The necropsy showed that the sow, which is the mother bear, had human remains in the digestive tract and one of the two yearlings also had human remains, a third one, another of the yearlings did not have human remains in their digestive tract.”

In an online obituary, Malavolta’s boyfriend, who did not identify himself, called her “my northern star and the love of my life,” and said she was a “lifelong adventurer and lover of the outdoors.”

“Laney spent her life in the outdoors and was an experienced and knowledgeable operator in the back country,” he wrote. “Her greatest joy was to be in the woods with our friends, our family and our dogs.”

He went on to say that the sorrow from her death was “eased” by the fact she was killed doing what she loved — spending time in the outdoors.

“While Laney’s physical presence was suddenly taken from this earth, all that know and love her can take comfort; Laney’s soul will live forever in her favorite place, doing her favorite thing,” reads the obituary. “She would not have wanted it any other way.”

“While this tragedy has shaken me and our family to the core, our burden is eased as we consider these facts.”
