The captain of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier that slammed into a ship near Egypt last week was yanked from the position “due to a loss of confidence in his ability,” the US Navy said Thursday.
Capt. Dave Snowden was “relieved” of his job at the helm of the USS Harry S. Truman and temporarily reassigned following the wild Feb. 12 crash in the Mediterranean Sea, according to the military branch.
“The U.S. Navy holds commanding officers to the highest standard and takes action to hold them accountable when those standards are not met,” the Navy said in a statement.
Snowden was relieved of his command due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command the vessel. US NavySnowden was replaced by Capt. Christopher Hill and temporarily assigned to Naval Air Forces Atlantic.
Snowden had been the skipper of the Truman since December 2023. He has a background in aerospace engineering and “flying combat missions over Iraq and Afghanistan,” according to his military biography.
A photo released by the Navy showed major damage to the side of the carrier after it collided with the merchant ship near Port Said for unclear reasons at 11:46 p.m.
The vessel was damaged in a collision with a merchant ship in the Mediterranean. U.S. Navy/Cody BeamThe vessel’s nuclear propulsion plants were in “safe and stable condition” following the accident, according to the Navy.
The carrier, which was built for a crew of 5,000, was deployed last fall to protect US interests in the Middle East after Iran’s missile barrage on Israel.
No injuries or flooding were reported after the accident.
The Truman has reportedly been in Souda Bay, near the Greek island of Crete, undergoing repairs since Sunday.
“While the ship is fully mission capable and the ship conducted flight operations following the collision, pulling into port for emergent repairs will enable the ship to continue deployment as scheduled,” Snowden said in a statement Monday, according to CBS News.
The carrier, which suffered damage to the deck and storage areas, was recently involved in a series of strikes against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
