Congress members want to give themselves pay raises that would boost their salaries for the first time since 2009.

House leaders are negotiating a deal that would end a freeze on cost-of-living increases.

Members make $174,000 a year, but the move would mean an extra $4,500 next year.

Democratic leaders are moving forward with 2020 fiscal funding bills that would remove that block, and restore an automatic 2.6% hike, Politico reported.

The National Republican Congressional Committee issued a prepared statement rebuking the move.

“Between voting for the public to finance their campaigns, opposing middle-class tax cuts and pushing to give themselves raises, the socialist Democrats’ need to charge their motto to ‘for the politicians,” the statement said.

But Politico reported that House Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise were involved in negotiations to strike a deal about ending the freeze.
