A North Carolina sheriff’s deputy was placed on leave Tuesday after video emerged of him tackling two teen girls to the ground during an arrest.
The Harnett County Sheriff’s Office reported the incident to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, which is investigating the case, ABC 11 reported. The officer in the video has not been publicly identified. The footage surfaced Monday on Facebook.
Police say the incident took place on Dec. 10, after someone reported smelling weed from a car parked outside their Harnett County home.
The driver of the car, identified as 17-year-old Tyrese Namirr Gary, had active warrants out for his arrest, and police took him into custody, WRAL reported.
Cops say they found a handgun under his seat and charged him with carrying a concealed gun and possession of a handgun by a minor. One of the girls in the car possessed a small amount of weed, cops said.
Brie Urban, 17, and her 14-year-old sister, Jewelianna Urban, were recording the arrest when the officer grabbed the phone away from Jewelianna and wrestled her to the ground.
“What are you doing right now? She didn’t do anything. Why are you doing that? What did she do?” Brie can be heard yelling in the video.
“You snatched her phone from her. That’s her personal property,” she adds.
A second officer runs over and helps the officer cuff Jewelianna, who kicks her phone over to her sister.
The officer can then be seen tackling Brie to the ground and grabbing both phones from her.
“This is my sister’s personal property,” Brie says after the cop goes after the phone.
“That’s evidence,” he replies.
“I didn’t do anything, sir. I did absolutely, I did nothing, sir,” Brie says before the footage cuts out.
Neither of the teens was charged. They claim the officers returned their phones but told them not to share the footage.
“The officer told me not to post it anywhere, not to let it get out,” Brie Urban told WRAL.
“For them to tackle me for recording is absolutely wrong,” she said. “I feel like I was harassed. I feel like that was assault. I don’t feel like I deserved that at all.”
She said that her back is in pain following the incident.
Brie said it was challenging watching police tackle her younger sister.
“Seeing my little sister, she’s 14, being tackled like that by a grown man, it was hard for me,” she said.
