Cops in one South Jersey town are looking for a heartless bird murderer who shot the community’s beloved peacock, Popeye, to death this week.

The fowl villain blasted a bullet into the wild bird’s leg in the Gloucester County township of East Greenwich, leaving the peacock mortally wounded, cops and community groups said in Facebook posts.

The colorful critter — who served as an unofficial town mascot and was often spotted strutting around yards and farms — was rushed to a veterinarian who tried to treat the “shattered” limb, according to a GoFundMe campaign launched to pay the vet bills.

Residents raised more than $1,000, but the bird was hurt too badly to recover — and the vet is now donating all of that money toward a reward to catch the bird killer.

“Year after year, we’ve enjoyed watching him, kids have grown up getting to know him, and everyone shares photos of where he is at any given time,” the sad post notes. “This is animal cruelty at its worst.”

East Greenwich Township police sent out a request seeking information about the pea-brained culprit, and called for the shooter to come forward Friday.

“We also invite the person who discharged the firearm to self-report,” cops said in the Facebook post.

Residents mourned the loss of the animal, and vowed to catch the jerk who killed him.

“For years, this peacock has roamed his neighborhood bringing smiles to kids and families, including the family of our hospital’s owners. A fund has been created to offer as a reward to anyone who has information on the shooter,” Saint Francis Veterinary Center of South Jersey wrote in a Facebook post.
