Los Angeles authorities have seized a staggering stash of more than 500 firearms – all from a single convicted felon, according to a report.
LA County investigators raided the Agua Dulce home of Manuel Fernandez, 60, on Thursday after receiving a tip that he possessed an arsenal, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Los Angeles Sheriff's OfficeInside his home, they found 432 guns, including rifles, shotguns and handguns – some decades old, according to the paper. The next day, the investigators uncovered 91 additional firearms, as well as electronic devices used to buy them.
The probe led police to a woman linked to the firearms purchases. While she was away, detectives recovered 30 guns from her home, officials said.
“The case is a testament to the community’s involvement in reducing crime and taking guns out of the hands of criminals,” Sheriff Jim McDonnell said.
Fernandez was busted on suspicion of being a felon in possession of firearms, a felon in possession of ammo and possession of large-capacity magazines.
His bail was set at $35,000, and he bonded out of jail Friday.
The Sheriff’s Department and the California Department of Justice found so many firearms that they asked the Bureau Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives for help in the case.
Investigators spent days checking the guns to track their history.
Sources said the owner appears to be a firearms collector as opposed to someone about to use the guns in crimes.
Authorities plan to present a case to the district attorney’s office for prosecution, officials said.
