Nearly 215,000 coronavirus cases have been reported worldwide — almost double the number from less than two weeks ago — according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University as of Wednesday afternoon.

Some 214,894 people have the potentially lethal infection, the university’s tracking map at coronavirus.jhu.edu/map showed.

The countries with the most confirmed cases are China (81,102), where the outbreak first began, and then Italy, Iran, Spain and Germany.

The United States ranks eighth, with 7,769.

Just over 8,700 people have died of COVID-19, the university says.

The majority of confirmed deaths are in China (3,122), Italy, Iran, Spain and France. The US is ninth, with 55 fatalities.

About 83,000 have recovered worldwide, including 106 in the US.
