The coronavirus hotspot of New York State is “flattening the curve” of cases, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday — while the predicted number of overall deaths nationwide went down.
The Empire State’s dramatic shutdown — which began March 20 — is beginning to pay off as the number of people flooding into hospitals slows down and the number of discharges ticks up.
Meanwhile, an influential model for the coronavirus has cut its projected coronavirus death toll by 26 percent.
As of Wednesday, the University of Washington now predicts that 60,000 Americans will die in the pandemic by Aug. 4, down from a projection of nearly 82,000 just a day earlier.
Here’s what else we learned today:
New York crisis:
- Even as Cuomo announced the number of hospitalizations had fallen in recent days, the Empire State reported its most virus-related deaths in a single day — 779 — pushing the death toll to more than 6,200.
- Officials released a racial breakdown of coronavirus deaths in the Big Apple, showing that African American and Hispanic communities are being hit the hardest.
New York state is “flattening the curve” of new coronavirus cases, Gov. Cuomo said Wednesday, with statistics showing the three-day average increase in the number of hospitalized patients holding steady near the level recorded March 22.China recovers:
- The Chinese city at the center of the pandemic, Wuhan, reopened today after a 76-day lockdown — and saw a mass exodus.
- The city was also treated to an elaborate light show.
COVIDIOTS:
- On Long Island, a pair of serial burglars thought they could commit break-ins with impunity because cops are busy handling the crisis — and were busted.
- And careless couples are turning the streets of NYC into a coronavirus obstacle course.
Lining up:
- Hundreds of Florida residents risked exposure in order to file paper applications for unemployment after a state website used as a portal for benefits crashed.
- And to avoid crowded lines of people waiting to vote, like those seen in Wisconsin Tuesday, Gov. Cuomo said all New Yorkers will be allowed to cast absentee ballots in the June 23 primary elections.
Rays of hope:
- Staffers at an Alabama hospital cheered for their first COVID-19 patient after he was removed from a ventilator.
- A 16-year-old student pilot has turned his love of flying into an opportunity to help deliver vital medical supplies to rural hospitals amid the outbreak.
Meanwhile…
- Stars, they’re just like us… getting stir crazy. Just take a look at actress Naomi Watts.
- Tonight is the first night of Passover. Here’s how to celebrate the holiday, while adhering to social distancing rules.
- Sales of a Dr. Anthony Fauci bobblehead raised more than $100,000 to buy protective masks for health care workers.
