A convicted sex offender abducted and raped a woman in Minnesota just hours after asking her husband for gas at the couple’s home, authorities said.
Anthony Randklev, 39, of Pelican Rapids, was booked Tuesday in Otter Tail County District Court on a slew of charges that include first-degree criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping in the Sunday afternoon attack at the couple’s rural home just north of Fergus Falls, the Star Tribune reports.
The violent encounter unfolded shortly after a man, believed to be Randklev, went to the house late Saturday to ask for gas — claiming his vehicle was running low and he needed to return to Fergus Falls. The husband later told cops that he gave the man gas, but noticed the vehicle’s gauge showed he had plenty to make it to his destination.
The woman, according to a criminal complaint, told a detective that Randklev awakened her the next day as she slept with one of her children and threatened to kill her family. The suspect allegedly bound the woman’s hands and dragged her out of the house through a sliding glass door.
Randklev then drove the woman to an abandoned home, where he forced her to undress before raping her at gunpoint, according to the criminal complaint. The suspect then fled, leaving the woman behind.
The woman’s three sons — all of whom are under age 10 — told responding deputies that a man wearing a mask broke into the home through a basement window and asked about their mother. The children told the officers they saw a pickup truck parked in a wooded area near the family’s home.
A witness reported seeing the pickup truck near the abandoned house where the woman allegedly was raped before someone spotted the vehicle at a gas station in Pelican Rapids. Police responded and the driver tried to speed away, sparking a chase that exceeded speeds of 90 mph and included shots fired by police before Randklev was taken into custody, according to the newspaper.
In 2008, Randklev was found guilty of kidnapping and assault after a woman told police he raped her and threatened to dismember her with a saw, TwinCities.com reports. But Randklev told the woman “he just couldn’t do it” before discussing an eclectic mix of topics, including UFOs and Bigfoot, as he held her captive in a wooded area, court documents said. Randklev then drove the woman to a cabin, where he raped her.
Randklev was sentenced to more than four years in prison, a sentence that ran concurrently with a six-year sentence for second-degree assault and fleeing a peace officer in a separate incident during which Randklev tried to outrun a tire deflation device in November 2007, TwinCities.com reported.
Randklev, who remained in custody ahead of a scheduled court appearance Tuesday, saw his court-ordered supervised release expire just one month ago, according to the Star Tribune.
