A dim-witted crook who googled “how to rob banks” before an armed robbery spree in Alaska has been sentenced to more than 10 years in federal prison.
Kaleem Tikori Fredericks, 23, was sentenced Monday after he and co-defendant Calel Calvis Alexis Crofford, 25, pleaded guilty to federal robbery and firearms charges in connection to a string of robberies two years ago at liquor stores, a gas station and a bank in Anchorage, the Anchorage Daily News reported.
Fredericks, according to an indictment, searched “how to rob banks” and “how to sell diamonds for cash” on his phone during the one-week robbery binge in August 2016.
Armed with a sawed-off shotgun, Fredericks and Crofford started their spree by robbing a liquor store of $741 before targeting two more liquor stores and a gas station. Those subsequent robberies netted less than $500 each, according to court documents.
The pair also robbed gold chains from a mall jewelry store before upping the ante at a Wells Fargo bank, where they took $25,956 in cash from tellers.
Investigators caught up with Fredericks and Crofford after one of their ex-girlfriends told Anchorage police that she recognized the Air Jordans sneakers worn by one of them in a photo released to the public after the bank robbery. They were later arrested at an airport in Anchorage while waiting to fly out of the state — and Crofford’s backpack was packed with $20 bills, according to a criminal complaint.
Both Fredericks and Crofford — who grew up together in the Caribbean — went awry after moving to Alaska and had battled drug problems, relatives and friends told US District Judge Timothy Burgess. Crofford, meanwhile, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in January.
