One of the Dallas cops killed in an ambush during a protest over police killings was identified as Brent Thompson, 43, who got married to a fellow cop just two weeks ago.

Thompson, a member of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit police force, is the first cop to be killed in the line of duty since DART formed its department in 1989, spokesman Morgan Lyons said.

He “served admirably” during his seven years on the force, DART Chief James Spiller told MSNBC early Friday.

“Brent was a great officer,” Spiller said. “He has served admirably during his time here at DART.”

Thompson was on patrol duty when he was killed, the chief said.

“This is very heartbreaking for us … we will definitely miss him, and we are also making sure that his family is taken care of,” Spiller added about Thompson, who marred another DART officer last month.

On his LinkedIn page, Thompson wrote: “I enjoy working on a challenging tasks and problem solving with my peers. I am constantly looking for different ways to serve the department, this helps to keep my work from becoming sedentary and boring.”

He joined DART in November 2009 after spending several years working as a liaison officer with American law enforcement in Iraq and Afghanistan for DynCorp International, a military contractor.

Thompson was mentioned in a 2006 New York Times article, which described him as the leader of an eight-man “saturation” training team that had been sent to Lashkar Gah.

Thompson’s team taught Afghan police military skills, “like how to launch or survive an ambush,” the paper reported.
