That’s one painful way of becoming the next big cheese!
Daredevil racers kept emergency crews busy during one of Britain’s most bizarre traditions — flinging themselves down a steep hill in pursuit of an eight-pound wheel of cheese.
Crazy footage shows the competitors crashing, spinning and flopping like rag dolls as they hurtle 200 yards down Cooper’s Hill in the annual cheese-rolling competition in Gloucestershire on Monday.
Although organizers did not announce a tally of those injured, video shows numerous racers in agony and getting medical help.
A shirtless man grimaced as he was carted down the hill in a stretcher, holding up a bandaged foot, while another appeared to have blood on his face along with a missing tooth.
“Cheese rolling is a dangerous activity for both participants and spectators,” a sign warned, stressing, “You attend entirely at your own risk!”
Even race winners were a testament to the dangers of the wacky, centuries-old tradition.
Flo Early, 28, won the women’s races — and immediately retired because of injury.
“I’m done now, this is it, I’m retired,” she said, according to The Independent. “I’m in pain with this ankle, it’s a sprain but it feels pretty uncomfortable.”
Max McDougall, 22, who won the first of three men’s races, admitted, “It was better than last year when I knocked myself out.”
Another men’s race winner, Ryan Fairley, 29, said, “My back does hurt a little bit but nothing that won’t sort itself out. I’ve got work tomorrow.”
He also gave tips for success in the madcap race.
“Just run and lean back and don’t just try and tumble forward because if you lean back you stay on your feet,” he said.
The unusual event has been celebrated for centuries and is thought to have its roots in a heathen festival to celebrate the return of spring, according to the BBC.
