WASHINGTON — Authorities in the nation’s capital say a 12-year-old flashed a knife and a 9mm handgun during an argument with another student over a pencil.

Citing a DC police report, WTOP-FM reports the 12-year-old KIPP KEY Academy student threatened to stab the other student Tuesday. Police say the boy then displayed a pocket knife before lifting up his shirt to show off the gun tucked in his waistband. The report says no one was injured and the knife and gun were surrendered to authorities.

The police report lists the offense as assault with a dangerous weapon, but the station says it’s unclear if the student was charged. The school was briefly locked down and sent a letter to parents saying the student is barred from classes pending school and police investigations.
