Washington, DC’s top law enforcement officer is bracing for violent protests next week when Congress meets to certify Joe Biden’s presidential victory.
District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine said he fears the nation’s capital will be overrun by the far-right extremist group the Proud Boys on Jan. 6.
“My level of anxiety is high. My preparation is even more intense than that,” Racine said on this week’s episode of CBS News’ “The Takeout” podcast.
He said he worries the Proud Boys will “pick fights, create damage, damage property, and then act in a very threatening way” — similar to when they brawled with anti-Trump protesters in the city in mid-December.
In the wide-ranging interview, Racine also addressed whether DC should be granted statehood.
“If you believe in the fight at the Boston Tea Party, no taxation without representation, then you should be an ardent supporter of DC statehood,” he said.
“There’s no reason why the District of Columbia should not be a state and have all those benefits, including two US senators and a congressperson who can vote in the House.”
