The son of Debbie Collier — who’s mysterious death has baffled cops after she was was found naked and partially burned in a ravine in on Sept. 11 — has said he’s wary of the people his sister Amanda Bearden associated with before his mother’s death.
Amanda, 36, has a history of arrests for fighting with her boyfriends and was once thrown in jail for faking a drug test. She had just moved back to Athens, Georgia, where Debbie lived with her boyfriend Andrew Giegerich two days before she disappeared.
Her brother Jeffrey Bearden said to 11Alive: “I do not think my sister has the capacity to hurt my mom. She was my mom’s lifeline.
“But, I don’t trust the people that my sister hangs out with, and that’s my concern.”
Debbie sent a final chilling message to her daughter, transferring $2,385 on the app Venmo with a note which said “They won’t let me go. There is a key to the house underneath the flowerpot.”
Amanda, who had last seen her mother the previous day, then reported her disappearance to police.
“I’ve never seen my mom Venmo that large amount of money, so no, that’s very out of character for her,” Jeffrey said. He also did not know who the “they” in the text message could be.
Debbie had not told anyone she was leaving home before she travelled around 60 miles from Athens to Clarksville in Georgia on Sept. 10. Shortly after her body was found the next day, the investigating Habersham County Sheriff’s Office released surveillance video of Collier browsing at a Family Dollar in Clayton on Sept. 10.
Bearden doubts that the woman on the Family Dollar surveillance video is in fact his mother. Habersham County Sheriff's Offic“I don’t know why my mom was up there,” Bearden said. “It doesn’t make sense to me why she was in Clayton. Especially that there is a Dollar General that she frequently visited that was less than a mile from her home [in Athens].”
Bearden was also confused by what his mother bought, which police say included a rain poncho, a large tarp, a reusable tote bag, a 2-roll pack of paper towels, and a refillable torch light. The tote bag and the tarp were later found next to her body.
“I’ve never known her to be a camper,” Bearden told the outlet. “I mean, we have tarps at the house. My stepdad works in construction. I found about 20 to 30 reusable bags at my house. She was very green, she had a bunch of those.”
Investigators near Collier’s vehicle in September. Joy Purcell/Now HabershamBearden went on to say he doubts if the person in the surveillience video is his actual mother.
“I have a lot of concerns about if that was my mom in that actual video because that doesn’t actually appear of like her posture,” he explained.
Although the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office has not released the names of any suspects, they previously confirmed they believed Debbie’s killing was “personal and targeted.”
Bearden shared that he has not gotten much of an update from the Sheriff’s Office. 11aliveBearden said he has received little communication from the sheriff’s office, and previously posted on Facebook claiming that they “snickered” as his request for an update late last month.
Local news source the Northeast Georgian recently reported an investigator from the department expect the case to be solved soon.
“We have made very significant progress and e are close to a breakthrough,” Col. Murray Kogod told the paper.
As for his mother’s killer, Jeffrey had only one, chilling message.
“I’m not going to stop until you are in jail or on death row,” he reassured.
