Despite a razor-thin lead and an opponent who has not conceded, Pennsylvania Democratic congressional candidate Conor Lamb declared victory early Wednesday in a special election in a deep-red Pennsylvania district.

Lamb was introduced as “congressman-elect” for the 18th Congressional District outside Pittsburgh and told supporters, “We did it.”

“Well, it took a little longer than we thought, but we did it,” he told supporters at a Hilton in Canonsburg. “You did it! You did it!”

An hour earlier, Republican state Rep. Rick Saccone thanked his supporters and said the race was still too close to call and vowed to keep up the fight into Wednesday.

President Trump carried the 18th Congressional District, beating Hillary Clinton 58 percent to 39 percent, just 16 months ago.
