Democrats in Virginia gained majority control of the statehouse for the first time in over two decades on Tuesday.

They were able to flip both chambers — state Senate and House of Delegates — which had been held by a slim Republican majority going into Election Day.

The victory is one of at least two big wins for the party in closely-monitored national elections that can offer clues on how next year’s presidential contest could unfold.

In Kentucky, Democratic candidate for governor Andy Beshear declared victory over Republican incumbent Gov. Matt Bevin.

Bevin, however, refused to bow out, telling his supporters, “We are not conceding this race by any stretch.”
