WASHINGTON – Democrats’ counterprogramming event to President Trump’s State of the Union address was hijacked by MAGA supporters and liberals dressed up like frogs — chirping “ribbit.”

Activists and lawmakers held dueling events on Tuesday night to present their counterargument to the president. Some speakers were there to entertain, some to rally the troops ahead of the November midterm election and some charged that Trump was lying to the American people.

“I’m not at the State of the Union speech tonight, because you’re not going to hear about the State of the Union. You are going to hear lie after lie,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) told the “People’s State of the Union” rally on the National Mall.

But, across Washington D.C., at the National Press Club, adults dressed as frogs dominated the room. Members of the audience embraced the theme, with many donning frog hats to get into the spirit.

And they yelled “ribbit, ribbit, ribbit” to praise the speakers, who included actor Robert De Niro.

The “Godfather” star closed out the “State of the Swamp” event and used his speaking time to blast President Trump, comparing him to an abusive spouse and a dictator.

“Our country isn’t so lovable right now,” De Niro told the crowd. “In the current climate, declaring love for our country is like an abused spouse professing love for their abuser.”

He went on to say: “We’re now in a country by and for a handful of dishonest, greedy and cruel authoritarians.”

“I feel betrayed by my country,” De Niro added as the crowd cheered him on.

The four-hour event was mostly entertainment and part rallying cry.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey – who famously said “f–k ICE” – tried to rally the activists ahead of the midterm election.

“Capture back that flag. Reclaim the meaning of patriotism,” he said. “Now is the time to step forward to organize to vote to serve, to run, and to build.”

Other speakers were there to entertain, including artist Robby Roadsteamer, who took to the stage dressed in his signature cow costume and bragged about being arrested by Immigration and Custom Enforcement agents.

Miles Taylor, the former Trump staffer who wrote the infamous “anonymous” op-ed in the New York Times, organized the “State of the Swamp” event and explained the frog theme, noting they were the symbol of the swamp.

“Who better to help us navigate the swamp than a creature born in the swamp? The frogs,” said Taylor, who is the founder of the anti-Trump group Defiance.

Taylor noted frogs also became a symbol of the protests in Portland, Oregon.

“The symbol of defiance of the United States of America became the frog. Why? Because when Donald Trump looked into Portland, Oregon, and he said the protesters are terrorists and insurrectionists. Some brave people showed up at an ice facility armed with inflatable frog costumes,” he explained.

The “Portland Frog Brigade” co-sponsored the event. The group of Democratic activists found social media stardom among liberals when they dressed as frogs to protest a Portland ICE facility.

Democrats inside the House chamber had their own form of protest. Many wore black and white pins tied to the Jeffrey Epstein case, demanding: “stand with survivors, release the files.” There was a black block in front of the word “files” meant to mimic the redactions in the files released by the Justice Department.

Others were more vocal. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) exchanged shouts with the president during his remarks, accusing him of “killing Americans.” Trump punched right back, telling her “you should be ashamed of yourself.”

But, back on the National Mall, about 20 Democrats and a few hundred supporters gathered for MoveOn.org’s event and found themselves interrupted by Trump protesters.

One rushed the stage as Murphy was speaking.

“Go Trump, go Trump,” the man shouted.

Two men grasped his arms and drug him off stage.

“Thanks buddy,” Murphy told the helpers.

Former MSNBC anchor Joy Reid, who co-hosted the People’s State of the Union rally, had harsher words for the interlopers.

“Attention all Maga trolls: your bulls–t is not welcome here,” she said. “F–k y’all.”
