A sheriff’s deputy in Texas was shot Monday after he responded to a call for a hunter on private property west of Fort Worth, authorities said.
Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler said in a news release Tuesday that the two-year department veteran was responding to report of criminal trespassing in the 4000 block of Cattlebaron Drive after a homeowner spotted a suspect hunting on his property illegally.
The responding deputy was then shot in the foot by the suspect, who was setting up an illegal deer blind on the property. He was taken to a hospital in Fort Worth, where he was treated before being released. He’s now recovering at home, Fowler said.
“We are relieved our deputy survived the shooting which could have been a potentially deadly situation,” the sheriff said. “We are pleased our deputy is recovering and is otherwise alright.”
The deputy has six total years of experience as a law enforcement officer and has been with the department since spring 2016, Fowler said.
Authorities have not released a description of the suspected gunman, but Fowler said investigators hope he surrenders peacefully.
Earlier reports indicated that the 27-year-old deputy broke his foot in the incident, according to the Weatherford Democrat.
