Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, whom President Trump is naming to helm a task force on school safety, says there is a “sense of urgency” in solving gun violence after the massacre at a Florida high school.
“I have actually asked to head up a task force that will really look at what states are doing,” she said Sunday on CBS’S “60 Minutes.” “See, there are a lot of states that are addressing these issues in very cohesive and coherent ways. ”
Asked if creating a panel on making schools safer is more talk than action, she said, “No, there is a sense of urgency, indeed .”
She said students — like the survivors of Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS, where 17 people were gunned down on Valentine’s Day — are leading the effort to limit gun violence.
Last week, DeVos was roundly criticized by students and teachers for not answering their questions when she visited the school in Parkland.
