Donna Shalala flipped the second House seat of the night for Democrats on Tuesday by beating Republican Maria Elvira Salazar.

Shalala, who served as secretary of Health and Human Services under President Clinton, won the seat to replace retiring Florida Republican Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

Shalala, who served as the president of the University of Miami for more than 10 years, had 52 percent of the vote compared with Salazar’s 46 percent with 57 percent of precincts reporting.

Democrats had hoped to win back the seat after Hillary Clinton won the district by nearly 20 points in 2016.
