Shocking video shows the moment at least 44 people were injured when a wave machine malfunctioned at a water park in China – unleashing a tsunami that swept over the swimmers.
In the footage, which went viral, the tidal wave hurls dozens of revelers – both adults and children – into the air as shouts of enjoyment turn into screams of terror at the Yulong Shuiyun Water Park in northern China.
Five of those injured in the aquatic disaster suffered broken ribs and were still hospitalized, according to the UK’s Independent, which cited a government statement posted on social media platform Weibo.
Officials at the park denied claims by some that the worker who was operating the machine was drunk, insisting that the machinery had broken down and set off the rogue wave.
The water park, which is near the border with North Korea, opened in 2015 and is attended by about a half-million tourists every year.
